Jack Johnson’s career as heavyweight champion was fraught with racial tension - white promoters consistently pushing forth challengers as “great white hopes” to gain the title back “for the white race”. In 1910 Johnson finally silenced his critics by flooring the previously undefeated champion James J. Jeffries who had come out of retirement specifically to win this war of the races…
Less than 3 years later Jack Johnson was convicted on trumped-up morality charges under the Mann Act and sentenced to a year and a day in jail. American society could evidently not tolerate his success as a black man, and even less so his sexual relations with a number of white women… Johnson is still awaiting a posthumous pardon from the President for this farcical sentence.
